Real-Time Results: Week 0

All of the peas successfully sprouted and emerged from the sand two days ago.  Hence, we are making our first CO2 measurements today and will report our first week's results at this time next week.  Figure 1 For now, we show in the accompanying figure the development of a seedling that grew from a pea we had planted in an extra 3-liter bottle that was not put into one of our experimental units.  The length of its tap root suggests that the roots of the plants in our poor man's biospheres may have already penetrated to the top of the layer of saturated sand in the bottoms of the bottles.
